Weapons

From Left 4 Dead Wiki, the free Left 4 Dead info source anyone can edit.

Jump to: navigation, search
Ammo piles can be used to refill on main weapon ammunition.

The main weapons in Left 4 Dead are divided into two tiers. The first is available to every Survivor when the scenario starts. Weapons in the second tier can be found throughout the maps and at the end of the scenario, just before the Finale. All weapons can be used to melee Infected within close combat, pushing them back.

There is currently no way to distribute weapons or ammunition among teammates. All weapons have an attached flashlight with an unlimited battery; however, the flashlight's beam is only visible to the player using that particular flashlight if the other player's game settings are set too low.

Picking up either tier of weapon from a table or other location holding new weapons (not from a dead Survivor) provides a full ammo refill, equivalent to interaction with an ammo pile.

Note: Weapons will continue reloading despite the lack of reloading animation during melee attacks, provided that reloading starts before the melee attacks. This is extremely useful if out of ammo, or both primary and pistol need to be reloaded as it allows the player to shove back attacking Infected while their weapon reloads in the background. When it is fully reloaded (after 2-3 melees' time) it can be used to kill the staggering Infected.

[edit] Main Weapons

[edit] Left 4 Dead

[edit] Tier 1

Each of the Survivors has the choice of starting with one of either of the first tier weapons, but they can switch or restock ammo on checkpoints.

[edit] Pump Shotgun
Main article: Pump shotgun

The pump shotgun is the most basic shotgun in the game. It deals high damage at close range but the spread causes it to be ineffective at medium to long range. It holds 8 shots and reloads/fires slower than its bigger brother. It has a decent sized spread but its fire rate makes it more useful indoors where your buddies can cover you in between shots and reloads. Always reload in between fights with a shotgun since its reload speed is slow. It is a combination between the Remington 870 shotgun, Mossberg 500, and Ithaca 37.

[edit] Submachine Gun
Main article: Submachine gun

The submachine gun is a small weapon that deals medium damage at long range. It is very accurate and can be effective at short range if sprayed in a horizontal arc. Effective when funneling Infected because the bullets travel through them. It is modeled after the Israeli UZI submachine gun.

[edit] Tier 2

Each of the Survivors have the choice of switching their first tier weapons to one of these on later checkpoints. Picking a Tier 2 weapon up will automatically fill the reserve ammo.

[edit] Assault rifle
Main article: Assault rifle

The assault rifle is an automatic rifle that deals high damage at long range. It is more effective than the submachine gun in all respects, doing more damage with higher accuracy. This is effective at killing special infected at a distance, and dealing constant damage at a closer range. It can be effectively used on tanks if attacking at a close range. It is modeled after the M16A3 assault rifle.

[edit] Auto shotgun
Main article: Auto shotgun

The auto shotgun is the next weapon up from the pump shotgun. It doesn't require a pump after every shot so it can be fired much faster, but if reloaded from empty "clip", the bolt must be pulled, which takes a second,so its best to reload before "clip" is empty. the rate of fire is an advantage for wiping out crowds of Infected and cr0wning witches. The range and power of the shots is also improved. It is modeled after the Benelli M1014 semi-automatic shotgun.

[edit] Hunting rifle
Main article: Hunting rifle

The hunting rifle has an attached scope that can be used to pick off Infected from long distances away. However, it is extremely ineffective at close range as each shot must be aimed at individual Infected. The best weapon to use if Infected pack into a small tunnel or hallway because of the power and ability to blow through Infected and hit others. It may also be used to penetrate walls. This is an effective weapon to kill Smokers who are on top of buildings. It is modeled after the Ruger Mini-14 rifle.

[edit] Left 4 Dead 2

These weapons has been seen in the Left 4 Dead 2 footage, according to Valve there will be lower versions of Tier 2 weapons such as a Tier 1 Hunting rifle.

[edit] Tier 1

[edit] Pump Shotgun

The Pump Shotgun is the most basic shotgun in the game. It deals high damage at close range but the spread causes it to be ineffective at medium to long range. It was revealed in very early builds of the Left 4 Dead 2 beta and rarely seen. It is modeled after the Mossberg 500 Marinecote.

[edit] Submachine Gun

The Submachine Gun fires bullets extremely fast, even more so than the Submachine Gun, All the bullets in one magazine can be fired in in 5 seconds. It has a capacity of 50 bullets each reload. It is suspected that this is will be a Tier 1 weapon. It is modeled after the Military Armament Corporation M11 submachine gun (colloquially known as the MAC-11) with a suppressor.

[edit] Tier 2

[edit] Auto Shotgun

The Auto Shotgun can shoot shells with a capacity of 10 shells each reload. It is suspected that this will be a Tier 2 weapon. It is modeled after the Franchi SPAS 12 semi-automatic shotgun.

[edit] Hunting rifle

The Hunting Rifle is stronger and has a better accuracy, it is a black color instead of brown. It has a capacity of 30 bullets each reload. It is suspected that this will be a Tier 2 weapon. It is modeled after the Heckler & Koch G3SG/1 rifle, a scoped G3 variant.

[edit] Assault Rifle

The Assault Rifle can shoot bullets with a capacity of 50 bullets each reload. It is suspected that this will be a Tier 2 weapon. It is modeled after the Fabrique Nationale SCAR assault rifle.

[edit] Other Weapons

[edit] Sidearm

Each of the Survivors starts with a pistol.

[edit] Grenades

Each of the Survivors can carry either one Molotov cocktail or one pipe bomb.

[edit] Close Combat Weapons

Close combat weapons are introduced in Left 4 Dead 2. The weapons are found at random points in the game (Any weapon can be obtained by any survivor when found), you cannot use any other weapon until you drop the close combat weapon. According to Valve, these weapons do little to no damage to some Special Infected. The only one mentioned was The Witch. However, it is widely assumed that this applies to the Tank as well.

[edit] Usable Items

These items found in various places in campaigns and be carried, once carried the character cannot use any other weapons until thrown or dropped, you can also use this weapon to push back infected.

[edit] Trivia

  • All of the weapons in Left 4 Dead 1 reuse weapon code from another Valve game, Counter-Strike.
  • The flashbang grenade was rumored to have been made a weapon at some point, which would have stunned all nearby Infected. However, this is no proof in the game files that a flashbang grenade ever existed.
  • The posters before each level sometimes show characters with scoped MP5s, but they are not usable in the actual game.
  • It has been rumoured that a revolver may also feature but there is little to no evidence of this as of yet.
