Talk:The Tank

From Left 4 Dead Wiki, the free Left 4 Dead info source anyone can edit.

Anyone think that we should change the tank rubric to show its health on all the different difficulties? Do other special infected have variable health? --Myogaman 16:28, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

I would consider that very useful information. The Witch also has variable health. Not aware of difference for other infected, but they die so easy, who cares if they have +/- 1 hitpoint anyway. Denkkar 16:34, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

I'm a wiki newb so someone with template experience needs to do it :P but the health info is on the Difficulty page. --Myogaman 16:46, 5 December 2008 (UTC)

I feel confident in the belief that the health of the Tank isn't based solely on difficulty setting. Thus far I've witnessed it's health total up to 4000, 8000, and 12,000 in all but the expert difficulty settings(which I've only witnessed total up to 4000 or 8000). I don't recall seeing anything but 4000 health in versus mode but then I've also had perhaps only five hours experience in it. I'd just edit this into the Tank page myself, but I'd prefer to not be presumptuous and allow someone who knows better to do so. Wandrian Wvlf 00:22, 7 December 2008 (UTC)

How are you coming up with those numbers? The simplest way to do it would be to just type "z_tank_health" in the console at the various difficulties and see what that returns. Denkkar 22:54, 8 December 2008 (UTC)

By adding up the damage dealt according to the post-chapter statistics. I don't believe that simply entering the command alone will necessarily be sufficient: it may very well be that the Director alters the health of the AI-controlled Tank and Witch in accordance with how well a team is faring. If I've already seen the Tank's health be triple what the purported easy difficulty's health is on two occasions, then I very strongly doubt that the difficulty setting alone determines it's health. Combined with the other little tweaks that appear to occur when teams are faring better/poorer(such as lesser availability of grenades or a medkit seemingly out of nowhere) I believe this to be a sound theory. Wandrian Wvlf 01:32, 9 December 2008 (UTC)

  • Ok, supposing the AI director does vary the health off the base instead of the damage statistics being buggy (impossible! the game has no bugs, haha), what the heck is the point of reporting a dynamic number instead of the base value? That hardly seems useful to me. I'm an engineer, so tell me that the health is 4500 when you played on Tuesday and 7800 on Wednesday so the real health must be (7800-4500) / 2 and I'll tell you your sample size if FUBAR. Also, you seem to be under the delusion that the AI director cares. It doesn't. Almost everything is utterly random, including mob spawns, items such as medkits/molotovs, and even whether or not their will be a tank and where it will spawn.
    • FYI: I play entirely on expert and have not noted significant variations in the amount of fire needed to take down a tank. So given that I can take down a tank by myself with a fully loaded rifle, any significant variations in tank health would result in an empty gun and a dead Denks. Of course, you would argue the AI director saw that my team was dead and gave me an easy time. Lies, it's all lies! ;-) Denkkar 18:46, 10 December 2008 (UTC)
Once again, if you are seeing extremely high numbers at the end of the map, it is probably because you came across more than one Tank during the map. The end statistics are no way to determine the health of any infected. --HarrisonH 19:13, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

thank you maddawg as i thought i was the only one who didnt like using that word as it made it sound that the tank was like a wizard out of world of warcraft or something who can "magically" conjure rocks out of mid-air Spygon 09:40, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

I think the tanks "muscle" is really an extra skin look at his fat hands.Bigens 01:09, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

"It is very hard to aim for the Tank's head as it is being obscured by its massive zombie muscle mutation, but if you do get a clean shot, take it. " I don't think headshots do any addition damage. In fact, I think that no matter where you shoot the Tank, it'll deal the correct damage. Headshots do nothing against a Tank. BlackliteWrath 18:15, 17 March 2009 (UTC)

"Generally, you need 51% health (green health bar) to defeat the Tank, according to the Left 4 Dead manual, though less is required on maps with obstacles to block the Tank." Is it just me, or does that sound like it implies that you HAVE TO HAVE a certain amount of health or else defeating the Tank is impossible? BlackliteWrath 11:55, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
It does make it seem that way. -§tigma-231hаt i ɯill nəvər escaρe[łalk][ςont] 15:56, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

Do Tanks throw regular infected? BPL 01:27, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Safe Room Door

Can the Tank break down the first safe room door after it's been opened, making any attempt to close it next to futile? -§tigma-231hаt i ɯill nəvər escaρe[łalk][ςont] 21:36, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

Well i've seen a lot of cases when you start and open the safe room door it isn't indistrucible anymore When i did this a tank came straight away so in my sense i went back to the safe room the tank came destroyed the door that sucked--TeriffiedToxic(Check out my wikia and help ploz Its (www.darkcrusade.wikia.com)) 08:33, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, currently the Tank possesses the ability to destroy the safe room door after the bar has been removed. However, there is a way you can stop it from being destroyed. If you can position yourself just right, pushing forward against the door while crouching, the Tank will not be able to hit you or break the door. This is extremely difficult to position yourself correctly. There is also a close position that gives the Tank the ability to hit you but not the door. On Expert, if this happens, you'll be incapacitated in place, keeping the door closed. So no, closing the door is not futile, it can save your life if you find the right position. Otherwise you could do what I do, running backwards and unloading your weapon on him whilst yelling: "DIE!! DIE, TANK, DIE!!" followed by either "Whoops, that didn't work" or "Target eliminated. Where'd you go, team?" :P --Five Dog(Talk) {Updates} 00:10, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
Correction, your pushing against the door theory is false, I posted a video on Stigma-231's talk page a long time ago, the patches are still up-to-date and the tank breaks the door only sometimes, as I wrote there, out of 10 tried tank busted the door only once (the video has the two last tries recorded within which you can see the 9th time where the door was broken and the 10th time where he just midlessly bashes agaisnt it). One last thing, my XFire ingame (and probably FRAPS which I haven't tested yet)is operational once again, if nessesary, I can record again using better recirders then the valve ingame recorder. --SilentShadow 11:07, 28 May 2009 (UTC)
Well whatever the case may be, as long as I can survive an Expert Tank, it makes me feel better to push against the door. :) --Five Dog(Talk) {Updates} 14:01, 28 May 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Funny Stuff

Once in survival mode a tank was climbing up some ladders so i stood on it's head and completly stopped it i don't know how but it was funny and i killed it easily--TeriffiedToxic(Check out my wikia and help ploz Its (www.darkcrusade.wikia.com)) 08:49, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

Yes, that is a glitch, doesn't work with regular infected, but it can be used to block:
  • The tank
  • Witches
  • Hunters (caution required)
  • Boomers (not recomended)
  • Smokers (caution required)
  • Survivors (if playing as the infected, in fact I use a boomer to block a survivor trying to reach the top of the ladder while my teammates incap the rest, if the player issn't smart enouth to jump down then his teammates die, if he does jump down, I jump down as well and vomit/explode on everyone)
--SilentShadow 11:16, 28 May 2009 (UTC)

Cool I didn't know it was a glitch And also lol--TerrifiedToxic I LIKE Cheese 13:32, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Wait, no chin means no double chin?

(oh and dont be a dick) Looking at the tank it seems theres a tongue sticking out and yet no chin. Why? Im just guessing dont be a dick like what it says up on the top and dont be a dick for me telling you not to be a dick. does all that muscle cover the chin or did it like got so big it pretty much got torn off? --Kirby888 23:01, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

...You could have just gotten to the point. I'd brush up a little on your "people skills" if I were you. In any case, its lower jaw is completely gone. -§tigma-231oƒ my caliber {τalk}{¢ont} 23:11, 13 June 2009 (UTC)

OH so you KNOW everything dont ya?!? NOT they say it maybe there under the muscle or not there and i said dont be a dick because some people can be dicks most of the time. Hopefully you read the whole thing --Kirby888 18:29, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, someone woke up on the wrong side of the computer. I do know a thing or two, though. And no duh I read everything you said. Who is "they," though? I personally don't think it has a jaw anymore, which leaves its tongue flapping around. -§tigma-231oƒ my caliber {τalk}{¢ont} 20:18, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

My God You are an idiot kirby--TerrifiedToxic I LIKE Cheese 13:31, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

Are you just a troll kirby? Stigma just wanted you to get to the point. Powers38Talk 14:12, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

Heh, this reminds me of the Witch's talk page. Let's not let it escalate that far...
Oh, and Kirby, either the chin did get ripped off due to the sheer amount of muscles, or again because of his muscles, he's focused so much strength into everything else and he's lost the ability to move it properly, hence, leaving it open. --Five Dog(Talk) {Updates} 14:30, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
I've stared at it after it's dead before, and I never see anything that so much as hints at jaw. -§tigma-231oƒ my caliber {τalk}{¢ont} 15:03, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
Hmm... Click on the image, look closer. That yellow strip under his tongue looks like a row of very worn out, neglected and yellowy teeth. Under the yellow strip looks what to be a flap of skin. His chin, perhaps? It would almost seem so. It even looks like it connects with the upper part of his mouth around the left side. Perhaps as he turned, his chest muscles fused together with his chin, effectively planting a lower jaw just below his new mouth. And perhaps because of this, he is unable to use it because it is not close enough or in sync with the facial muscles.... Interesting.... And yes, this is of course an opinion, not fact. --Five Dog(Talk) {Updates} 15:17, 15 June 2009 (UTC)
I can sort of see it, actually, but I'm still not sure I'm convinced. Stupid sexy Valve and your secrets! -§tigma-231oƒ my caliber {τalk}{¢ont} 15:20, 15 June 2009 (UTC)

Kinda hard to see for me. His tongue always seems to hang out and cover his "chin".=/ He might not have a chin so that is why his tongue hangs out? Just a thought. On another note, Louis died! =( One of my favorite guys! Powers38Talk 11:56, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Not directly under his tongue, but to the left of it. Oh, and you misread me. He doesn't have a chin anymore, but that little flap of skin there could have been his chin that was implanted in his chest when he mutated. It's not properly connected so technically he doesn't have one and he can't use it, but that may be what happened to it.
On another note, what? What are you talking about? Louis died?! NOO!!! Find him in a survivor closet. :P --Five Dog(Talk) {Updates} 13:25, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
Insert obligatory gay joke here. -§tigma-231oƒ my caliber {τalk}{¢ont} 15:29, 16 June 2009 (UTC)
Nah, I'll just keep talking about the tongue and the flap of skin and the fact that things "hang out". Hmm....... Nope, I don't see the relevance to gay jokes.... :P --Five Dog(Talk) {Updates} 15:46, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

wow.. where did this flame war come from? Now to my position on this subject. I believe that the Tank's jaw, or mandible has fused with his chest. I'm pretty sure i've seen what resembles cheeks on the Tank. Stretch out cheeks leading to his chest. Okay, time to think about anatomy. The Tank's spine is bent over. It does not stand erect, and so its lower jaw may have fused with the hollow in The Tank's throat. (Go on. take your fingers and feel the place between your neck and your chest.) if you bend your head forward, you will find that the lower jaw's shape matches the hollow's shape. In addition to that, the mass of muscle that suddenly developed may have also trapped the jaw in the chest. waterga74 07:08, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

HA! I found a chin on the tank SO NOW YOU CAN ALL SHUT UP!!!! --Kirby888 16:26, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

Woah... Umm, cool. But, uh, calm down. --Five Dog(Talk) {Updates} 17:49, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

Hey Kirby. ever thought of getting yourself checked to see if ur mentally retarded? cuz i think u r. (name disclosed to keep pedophiles away...)

Sorry about it. I never knew one message can cause a world war III. The tank actually does have a tongue. Proof? Well few days ago me and my friends killed a Tank. He fell of the box cart with his up looking UP. looking to the to the side of the tongue are teeth. Pretty much means theres a little tiny chin there. Now everyone this post is finish. --Kirby888 23:52, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

I come baring proof. The Tank DOES have the remains of his lower jaw. They are almost covered by his muscle and tongue, but it's there.

[edit] Tank on expert

On expert, the tank kills you in 3 hits, 1 for incapacitating, 2 when you're on the ground, however, once in a while, I found out that I lived through the third attack(Where he supposedly KOs you.), but I somehow live through that and get killed on the fourth hit. I think the former is true only if the tank is on fire. Most people seem to set the tank on fire so I'm led to think that the editors who said the tank kills you in 3 hits are people who got killed by tank while it was on fire. So, the real question is, does it still take 3 hits to kill you if the tank is not on fire? {{SUBST:Nosubst|Signatures/Powers38}} 09:58, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

Yes it does. Three hits, fire or no fire, three hits. I think yours was a glitch.

[edit] Melee = Damage? Also, the Johnny Bravo Tank mod

If you melee the Tank in the back, it attracts his attention. But does it cause any damage? I mean, not that you're gonna melee him to death, but every bit counts huh?

Also, would the Johnny Bravo sound mod get one kicked from servers? --LOL.its.Neotails 17:26, 8 August 2009 (UTC)

Nope. I've used the sound mod, and I haven't been kicked from servers. ~Rekku64

[edit] Floats

"The Tank's corpse floats if you kill it in water, as seen in the Boathouse Finale."

Does it really? I'm new here as well as to the L4D series, and I just finished the boathouse finale the other day, and by chance, I did stay near the edge of the water and kill a Tank there as well, but it just slowly (and I mean slowly) rolled down the hill into the water. Perhaps I didn't let it get deep enough in the water to float, but I don't recall it floating. Baltro [ talk · edits ] 19:29, 15 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit] Punching Garbage Bin in Opening Movie

I was just wondering if that's really what happened. It most likely is but I would just like some conformation. When the survivors reach the ladder in the opening movie Francis turns around and saids "Come on, come on!" then the Tank shows up and hit him with a infected. For a brief moment I swear I saw a flash of green going across the screen knocking back a few infected right before the Tank appaered around the corner. There was a dumbster down the alley that the survivors ran past to get to the fire escape. Can anyone get like a screen shot or something to confirm? I might be really late on this and it's something that's obvious to everyone else. I didn't know there was a Boomer corpse in the movie for almost three months.Crossy the Coward 12:53, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

Hmm. Watching it now, I'm pretty sure that it's just the Tank's shadow dashing across the wall and hiding the Infected. I know he can hit garbage bins, but I don't think he did it that time.
Oh, and this topic would probably be more appropriate here. :) --Five Dog(Talk) {Updates} 13:14, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

[edit] possible tactic

When you play as the tank i wonder if it is possible to block the safe room (one they need to finish the match) with a car so they have to restart or just hold off untill they die.(great practice for training a an infectd your not good as. i'm bad as smoker, getting better.)-tanks hunter

You can. It's not well respected, but you can. Whatever is blocking will eventually disappear however, so it'll only stall. Jo the Marten(Shriek) ಠ_ಠ 23:32, November 7, 2009 (UTC)
