The Baseball Bat is a new close combat weapon introduced in Left 4 Dead 2. It's only available to players that pre-ordered the game. However, players who take part in a game with someone who preordered it, will also have access to the weapon.[1]
The baseball bat, along with all other melee weapons, occupies the same slot as the pistols, replacing them when it is picked up. It has unlimited uses, meaning that it can be very useful when the Survivors run out of ammo in a middle of combat and are in too much danger to use the pistols. Like the other close combat weapons it can kill every Common Infected in one hit, even going so far as to easily detach the head of the Infected. However, it has its disadvantages. The baseball bat is not really meant to be used against Special Infected; using it on a Boomer would spread bile over the Survivors, and a Spitter would cause you to be right in the middle of the dangerous goo.
[edit] Trivia
- In the first Left 4 Dead 2 trailer, the attack sound uses the same audio attack from Team Fortress 2, a metal ding sound. The sound files have been changed to fit the wooden properties of the bat.
- The American Baseball Bat is only available to players who pre-ordered Left 4 Dead 2, meaning it is not needed to get the Club Dead achievement.
- The bat always appears at the start of a new campaign. Also, it is not a single weapon unlike other melee weapons; the entire team can grab one. All other bats found throughout the campaign are single weapons however.
- The Baseball Bat and Chainsaw are the only melee weapons available in all campaigns.
- The Baseball Bat is the only melee weapon which launches the heads off of Common Infected like baseballs when aimed correctly.
